The Decline of a Legend: Francis Ford Coppola’s Controversial Career Post-1990

Prior to Emilia Perez, the most-nominated international films at the Oscars were Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Roma (2018), with each receiving 10 nominations.
She has made history with the nomination of Karla Sofia Gascon, who becomes the first out trans actress to receive an Oscar nomination for her leading role in the film.

Demi Moore, recognized for her roles in big films during the 1990s, earned her first Oscar nomination for the body horror movie, which also secured a Best Director nomination for French director Coralie Fargeat.

The movie that caused viewers to storm out last year is, rather unanticipatedly, up for the Oscars, given the Academy’s long-standing hesitation towards films in the horror category. With a nod for Best Picture, it has now become just the seventh horror flick to snag this accolade, linking itself with The Exorcist, Jaws, The Sixth Sense, The Silence of the Lambs, Black Swan, and Get Out in this rather distinguished category.

The Brutalist, recently caught up in an AI row, is still the frontrunner for a host of major awards. This nearly four-hour film has won its way to the top in many categories — Best Picture, Best Directing Brady Corbet, Best Actor Adrien Brody, Best Supporting Actress Felicity Jones, and Best Supporting Actor Guy Pearce. It is the first Oscar nomination for the former Neighbours star.

Jones stars alongside other British acting nominations — Erivo for Wicked and Ralph Fiennes for Conclave. Representing the UK as well is Aardman's Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl in Animated Feature Film. Nominated, among others, is Elton John for his song "Never Too Late" from the doc nom.

Unlikely, of course, that the newly elected US president, Donald Trump, will take kindly to the nomination of the critical biopic The Apprentice, which traces his beginnings as a real estate mogul in New York City. The film has received mixed reviews, and Marvel actor Sebastian Stan is credited with bringing to life Trump in what many consider an impressive performance. Strong also gets a nod for his supporting role as the controversial lawyer and Trump's mentor, Roy Cohn.

Strong's nomination will bring about a reunion with Kieran Culkin who is widely expected to take home Best Supporting Actor for his role in A Real Pain.

Once the Oscars conclude on 2 March, it’s likely that Timothée Chalamet will be the most pleased person there. He is a strong contender for Best Actor due to his well-received performance as Dylan in A Complete Unknown and has raised his chances of being part of a movie that wins a major award that night. Because of the nomination for the sci-fi spectacle Dune: Part Two for Best Picture.

If the purpose of the Oscars is to honor the craft of filmmaking and encourage viewership of movies, then it stands to reason that the producers of Nickel Boys, an adaptation of Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, are likely feeling quite pleased today. The film has received glowing reviews but has only managed to gross a little over $1 million at the global box office. A nomination for Best Picture along with Best Adapted Screenplay should really help shine a little more light on a film that deserves far more recognition.
